JW Anderson Tokyo Capsule — Hana Park, Naka-Meguro Atelier, Sunday afternoon

Final 1 — direct portrait, JW Anderson capsule editorial register

Final 2 — genderless silhouette context, atelier-window light

Making-of — Yuki at the Mamiya RZ67, Hana at the paper-roll, mid-frame check

The Tuesday submission window for the JW Anderson Tokyo capsule list closes 18:00. Hana Park is the primary lead-card in the four-card Aoi-Cluster bundle. The capsule-coordinator pre-cast read of the Acne back-room context plus the Saturday fitting-run had landed clean, but the editorial-register test-sheet was still open. We booked the Naka-Meguro atelier Sunday afternoon between the Kenji-Cafe-Marc brief-conversation and the 17:00 submission-workflow lock.

The atelier is a second-floor warehouse space on the Meguro-gawa-bridge-third-south side of Naka-Meguro, north-facing window-bay, daylight stable from one-thirty through to four. Paper-roll backdrop in cool-grey for the direct portrait, then we rolled out the matte-black canvas for the silhouette context. Profoto B10 set up as a bounce-off the south-wall scrim for the fill, not the key. Mamiya RZ67 on the tripod, 110mm, six-by-seven medium-format. Hana came in at fourteen-fifty, had been at Sakuradai serviced-apartment all morning resting after Saturday-fitting-run. She brought the JW Anderson capsule reference-look she had been wearing in Saturday fittings — black overdye tee, wide tailored black trousers, the small black cross-body bag.

For the first set-up we worked the editorial-register direct portrait. JW Anderson capsule wants the Tokyo-domestic readability that does not collapse into ambient-domestic — the register has to read as both legible and specific. Hana's stillness gives the legible side, the genderless tall-narrow geometry plus the cropped hair plus the single silver ear-cuff gives the specific side. Six exposures. The Polaroid-Pack proof on Polaroid 669 came clean by the third exposure.

Second set-up was the silhouette context, matte-black backdrop, Mamiya at hip-height with the camera tilted up two degrees to get the full tall-narrow line. The lighting tightened to a single rim-edge to define the silhouette without flattening the front-volume. Four exposures, three of them usable for the editorial-thread.

Making-of frame was caught by the assistant during the polaroid-check between exposures three and four of the first set-up. I am behind the Mamiya, polaroid-print held in my right hand at chest-level, looking up to read the print against the rolling-light. Hana is at the paper-roll waiting, hands resting at her sides, the silver ear-cuff catching a small daylight-highlight from the north-window. The light-meter is on the side-table. The atelier-junior-assistant Yui-san (newly-onboarded last week) is just out of frame to camera-left adjusting the bounce-scrim.

Brief-class delivered: editorial-new-face plus top-tier-commercial plus mixed-heritage-asian register, JW Anderson Tokyo capsule primary lead pre-cast supporting material. The two final frames go into the Tuesday capsule submission-pack alongside the Saturday-fitting-run material plus the Mariko-IMG-cross coordinator-route. Brief-match-anchor for the capsule reads: presence-with-tool (the read-the-brief gesture from Acne back-room twenty-two minutes), genderless-mixed silhouette legible-plus-specific, IMG-Tokyo-secondary plus Seoul-Esteem-primary cross-coordinator-route through Aoi-Cluster-hand.
