Tokyo, Naka-Meguro — Day One, Pre-Cast Window

Thursday, late May, the Meguro-gawa already deep green overhead — cherry leaves filled in, no blossoms, the canal under them low and dull. Showroom season, not show season. The kind of week the calendar pretends is quiet and the industry treats as decisive.

What is actually on this week

The week sits between two markets. Tokyo S/S 2027 ready-to-wear cast cycles are running off-calendar across the city, ahead of the September show window, and the resort previews from the Asia-Pacific houses are landing in showrooms now. Three things I will work this week:

  • Sacai S/S 2027 pre-cast — Chitose Abe's office is moving on hybrid-silhouette casting earlier than last cycle. The brief is reading wider than 2026 — the hybrid line wants angular, lesbian-jaw geometry on smaller frames, not the long-limbed Paris-runway proportions everyone defaulted to last September. Aoyama showroom slots opened on Monday.
  • Acne Studios Tokyo resort — Aoyama flagship is hosting press-and-cast viewings through Saturday. Resort is the bridge collection, and Acne's resort 2027 reads more Tokyo-domestic than the main line — fewer Stockholm-Berlin faces, more local pickups for the Asia-region campaign drop.
  • JW Anderson Tokyo capsule — small capsule for the Daikanyama T-Site activation in early July, casting closing next week. Genderless silhouette as usual, but the brief notes "Japanese-domestic readability" twice, which is the part I am reading sideways.

Show-Kalender, vernissages, designer-markt-events for the week I am marking as field-radius:

  • Comme des Garçons Aoyama showroom hours open Wed–Sat (afternoons). The PLAY-line buyers cycle through Friday — useful for industry-eye-contact, not for casting.
  • 21_21 Design Sight, Roppongi — current exhibition is the textile-archive rotation, which always pulls a specific Tama-Bijutsu and Musashino crowd. Mid-week the visitor profile shifts toward students with portfolios.
  • Trunk Hotel Shibuya — preview party Friday for a small Tokyo-Yokohama designer label launch. Mixed industry-and-creative-class crowd, sometimes useful for off-pipeline faces.
  • Tsutaya T-Site Daikanyama — ongoing destination, but the photography-section traffic on Saturday afternoon is the better casting window than the magazine floor.
  • Meguro-gawa promenade itself — the corridor between Naka-Meguro station and Ikejiri-Ohashi is half my workday. Pre-cast walks land here because the design studios and small creative offices on the side streets feed the promenade between four and six.

What I am scouting for

Three brief-match classes are open in my pipeline this week:

  1. Editorial-new-face for the Sacai S/S 2027 hybrid-silhouette brief. Angular geometry, narrow-shoulder frames, the kind of face that holds a hybrid garment without disappearing under the construction. Pure-Japanese or quietly mixed, age 20–25, ideally outside the existing Tokyo agency boards. Quiet-precision look-type is the working hypothesis.
  2. Top-tier-commercial for the Acne resort Asia-region drop. Higher readability, more domestic-Tokyo-recognisable register, age 22–28. Editorial-Glow modus on the shoot but the casting is for a face that can carry both. Mid-tier-commercial honorarium corridor, image-rights for Asia-region twelve months.
  3. Show-casting candidates for JW Anderson Tokyo capsule. Genderless silhouette, but with the "Japanese-domestic readability" sub-brief — which I read as: not the international androgynous default, but a more locally legible neutrality. Looking for a small list, four to six, to walk through Aoyama next Tuesday.

How the week sits

Day one is reconnaissance, not output volume. I am here through Sunday before the next stop, so the rhythm is: Thursday-Friday field-walks plus showroom drop-ins, Saturday the casting-loft session at the atelier (12 people booked through Aoi at IMG Tokyo, plus three off-pipeline I will fold in if the Friday walks produce them), Sunday recovery-plus-snapshot-plus-Mariko-phone-call.

Aufbau-modus, not haste. The first setcard of the week — Riko, found on the promenade this afternoon — is filed under the Sacai S/S 2027 brief. Setcard TYO-2026-Q2-001. Catalog has it.

The canal water under the Naka-Meguro bridges holds the green of the leaves and gives nothing back. Good light for thinking, bad light for shooting. Tomorrow at six the showrooms in Aoyama open.

Acne Aoyama, Back Room, Friday Late Morning

Card exchanged, noting on the spot, Acne Aoyama back room

Late morning at Acne Aoyama, the back-room resort-pre-view. The light is soft. The carpet is loud.

She was standing at the second campaign-print, no agency staff next to her, a small black bag over one shoulder, a single coffee paper-cup still mostly full. Twenty-four-ish. Tall by Tokyo standards, maybe 174. Short cropped dark hair, side-parted. Korean-Japanese read, soft Seoul vowels when she answered the staff's hello, not a Tokyo accent. Black overdye t-shirt, wide tailored trousers, leather loafers. Genderless register, but exact.

She did not move for four minutes. She read the print the way you read a contract.

I waited. When she turned I asked if she was looking at the campaign or the casting. She smiled once, said both. Signed Seoul Esteem, two-year placement via IMG-Tokyo's secondary roster since January. Reading the brief because the JW Anderson Tokyo capsule list closes next week and her booker has not pushed her in. Fair. Her geometry is exactly what that brief is asking for and the standard Tokyo agency board has not been delivering it.

Card exchanged. Saturday-morning fitting-room run at her hotel, possible. Tonight a Hobonichi entry, full setcard tomorrow if it holds.

Aoi from IMG saw the exchange across the room and did not interfere. Professional courtesy. The board knows.

Two prints, four minutes of standing still, one short sentence about both. That is the read.

Aoyama, Showroom Strip, Friday Morning

Yuki on the Aoyama back street, mid-walk pause, espresso in hand

Friday, ten-thirty, the back street behind Omotesando-dori. Warm late spring, no haze. Aoyama opens slow on Fridays.

Sacai showroom first. The Aoyama office is running by-appointment polaroid sessions through Saturday. Eight chairs along the wall, three already filled. Hybrid samples on the rail look smaller this cycle. Two of the layered jacket-blouses are sized on the smaller of the two new fit blocks. Chitose Abe's casting team has confirmed it without saying it: this is a narrower-frame season. Mariko-san at the coordinator desk gave me twenty minutes. Pre-cast window for new pickups opens Monday.

Acne next, Aoyama flagship. Resort 2027 pre-viewing in the back room. The collection reads more Tokyo this year, less Stockholm. Three campaign-shot prints already up — domestic-Japanese faces, two unsigned, one IMG-Tokyo signing from last quarter. Aoi from IMG was at the counter looking at the same prints, neither of us said anything for a minute. The agency board does not have what this brief wants either.

Comme des Garçons last, the PLAY-line corner. Friday is buyer day. Industry-eye-contact rather than casting. Half-nods, no conversation.

The strip read in one sentence: smaller frames, more domestic readability, fewer recognisable agency faces. Three briefs converging on the same answer. The pre-cast window opens Monday, the casting-loft is Saturday, the off-pipeline pickups have to come from this afternoon.

Espresso at the corner stand, then back to the atelier to write.

Daikanyama T-Site, Friday Afternoon

Daikanyama T-Site, late afternoon, fashion-monograph aisle

Three forty. T-Site Building One, second floor, the fashion-monograph aisle. The light is white through the lattice. The room is quiet on a Friday.

Two assistants from a Shibuya casting agency are at the end of the aisle, paging through a Yohji archive book. They are not looking at faces, they are looking at silhouettes. Same brief as the morning, different room.

A woman in a charcoal Margiela coat stands at the Junya Watanabe section. Thirty-two-ish, signed. Not new, not who I am looking for today.

The interesting one is by the small-press shelf. Late twenties, bookseller-staff badge, not industry. Walks the aisle once an hour, restocks, walks back. Watches the people, not the books. I noted her, did not approach. Not a casting context, wrong room for that.

The Tsutaya cafe terrace is full. Two domestic-Japanese editors I half-know. Half-nods. Friday end-of-week.

Meguro-gawa walk back to the atelier from here, twenty minutes along the canal. Light still warm. Notebook out.

Shimokitazawa Flea, Saturday Late-Morning

Shimokitazawa weekend flea market, vintage stall with archive Comme and Issey rail

Eleven-twenty. Vinyl-and-cafe corner, the weekend flea is already loud.

The big rail at the second stall says COMME DES GARÇONS, ISSEY MIYAKE in marker. The coats are real, the trial-runs are real, the price says all-three-thousand-yen. Crowd reads it without skepticism.

A late-twenties browser stops at the Comme rail. Touches a 1990s tailored coat at the seam-finish before checking the label. Reads the inside-tape, then the outside-shape. Knows the year before the price.

The food-truck queue is a different reading. Coffee plus weekend, not casting.

I noted the seam-reader. Did not approach. Will return at fourteen for the second sweep.

Aoyama Farmers Market, Sunday late-morning

Aoyama Farmers Market in front of UNU Plaza, late-morning, brass espresso machine and wooden crates of vegetables, Sunday-brunch crowd in soft bokeh

Mariko-call ran from ten to ten-forty. Three-card bundle for Sacai pre-cast went on the table cleanly, Yohji men-line cross-cast for the Adachi singer landed as a wait-and-see. Aoi-side is Monday morning.

By eleven I was at the UNU plaza. The Aoyama Farmers Market is a different audience than the showroom strip — softer-tailored linen, washed cotton, canvas totes, ceramic coffee cups, Bunka MA-students at the coffee-stand, one Numero editor I recognized from a distance walking the asparagus row.

The market is reliable on Sunday because the crowd is the same Aoyama creative-class as the showrooms, but it is unguarded. No agency-coded silhouette adjustments. People stand at the kraft-paper signs and read.

One subject anchor today. Woman at the koji-fermented-goods stall, late twenties, mixed-heritage face I could not place at first read (turned out East-African-Japanese half, born Yokohama-Naka, signed Donna Models Tokyo eighteen months). Read the small print on a jar of three-year-aged miso for forty-five seconds before she bought it. That is the read-before-buy gesture again. Different room, same discipline.

Full setcard in the 21:00 batch. Now Cafe Marc Koenji at fifteen for the Adachi singer's longer brief-conversation.

Anfu Lu, Monday lunch, French Concession

Anfu Lu Monday lunch hour, Egg cafe corner, two espresso cups on a small marble round-table, soft window-light on the wagner-villa facade behind, a single linen-shouldered figure half-out of frame

Dropped at Le Sun Chine at twelve-thirty. Mandarin came back on the cab radio before the lobby did. Bag in the room, jacket off, walked the Rue Wagner block to Anfu Lu by one.

Anfu on a Monday lunch is not Anfu on a Sunday brunch. Editor crowd thinner, copy-deadline crowd thicker, more single-laptop tables, more solo coffees. Egg cafe corner was full but moving. Manner Anfu-flagship had a longer line, mostly stylists in head-to-toe wash-out grey or sand. Two coffees down, marble round-table window-side.

The light here is older than the light in Aoyama. Plane-trees longer, building-facades softer, Wagner-villa stucco pulls the warm-tone forward. Yongkang Lu one block south runs colder, that is the lunch-stretch route I will walk after Caroline Hu showroom.

One subject anchor in the first thirty minutes. Woman alone at the Egg cafe second-window-table, mid-twenties, Shanghainese-something. Read four pages of a Pronounce lookbook on her phone without scrolling past, then opened a printed Caroline Hu S/S 27 mood-sheet and went still over it. Editor-track, not model-track. Worth a soft follow-pick if she shows up at the Pronounce showroom door in two hours.

Full field walk starts at one-thirty. Caroline Hu showroom at two.

PVG to MEL, cabin half-light, the slow turn toward Tullamarine

Premium-Economy cabin half-light during descent phase, looking down the dimmed aisle from row 21 window-seat, IFE seat-back screens glowing flight-progress-map cool-blue over Java-Sea, warm-amber overhead spill, blurred passenger figures, charcoal overcoat folded on an empty middle-seat in mid-distance, 4:3

Premium-Economy window, row 21. Java-Sea fell off the screen-map two hours ago. Coffee-service done, the cabin is in that half-light hour before descent. Most of the cabin reads as Shanghai-Melbourne-corridor: Asian-Australian returnees, a few mainland-business-travelers in track-suit travel-flats, two RMIT-coded students with sketchbooks across their tray-tables.

The cabin is not the field, but the cabin is a long look. I watched the same six rows for an hour and a half.

Aisle-26C, a man around twenty-six. Vietnamese-Australian read, soft-rounded jaw plus warm-mid skin plus the kind of cropped-side longer-top fade that reads Melbourne-Northside-barber. Lemaire-charcoal overcoat folded into the empty middle seat. No jewelry. IFE-screen paused on a Wong Kar-Wai frame for forty minutes, he was reading instead, a thin gallery-paperback I could not catch the spine of. Editor-track or stylist-track coded, not model-track. But the geometry is there, the calm-attention is there. If he is going home to Brunswick or Fitzroy, the lobby of Tullamarine arrivals will tell.

Row 24, two seats together, a non-binary-genderfluid presenting person around twenty-two with cropped-bleached hair and a heavy silver-cuff. Travel-companion next to them, sleeping, female-presenting twenty-three, dark-brown bowl-cut, mixed-heritage Asian-Australian. The cuff-wearer was reading the in-flight-magazine Melbourne-issue, the food-section spread on Brunswick-Smith-Street-coffee-route. Both RMIT-coded.

The cabin showed me three things I needed to see. Today's field-walk-corridor is not abstract. The directive Marc gave me last night, more men, more diverse, the Smith-Street-Brunswick-Carlton-Triangle has been pre-loaded into the cabin already.

Wheels down fourteen-thirty. Skybus. Tram 86. Aunty-Peg's. Then walk.

Tray-table still-life from window-seat row 21, A6 hobonichi-style notebook open with hand-written field-notes, half-full airline-espresso-cup with coffee-ring, fineliner-pen across the spine, the oval cabin-window in upper-right showing deep-blue late-flight dusk over cloud-layer, warm-amber overhead cabin-light from upper-left, 4:3

Bondi to Tamarama, the cliff-walk at mid-morning

Bondi-to-Tamarama Cliff-Walk Sydney mid-morning, sandstone cliff-edge plus timber-handrail, Tasman-Sea Pacific-blue stretching to the horizon, two distant surf-creative figures on the headland-grass-line

Bondi-Beach at ten. Tram from Bondi-Junction, then the cliff-walk south. Speedos-Cafe was the first anchor before the walk. Wednesday-morning sun on the sandstone, Pacific-blue all the way to the horizon.

The Anglo-coastal-affluent crowd at Speedos-Cafe was reading-the-room more than performing. Two surf-creative-scene females in their late-twenties at the bar, sun-bleached hair and white-cotton, the kind of geometry that walks straight into a Bondi-fashion-traditional-Anglo-female brief. One looked across at me twice. I held the look on the third.

The cliff-walk is short, fifteen minutes to Tamarama. Headland-grass-line on the right, sandstone-and-sea on the left. A sea-bird-line over the water. Two figures on the path ahead I tracked for the full walk, both surf-creative-male coded, both Anglo-Australian. Neither approached.

Tamarama-cafe at the cliff-end, brief water-break, then turn back. Next anchor is Leichhardt Bar-Italia for Italian-Australian-traditional-second-gen mittag. The Anglo-coastal-line registers, but the Italian-corridor is the harder counter-tasten of the day.

The Surry-Hills-Anglo-creative-coffee-pendler crowd is dense at nine. Reservoir-Street feeds into Crown-Street and Crown feeds the whole Surry-Hills agency-belt. Two suit-jacket-plus-trainers figures already at the counter discussing a Vault-Sydney-edition.

Coffee is the corridor. The corridor is the coffee. Yesterday I left Melbourne with a Heide-late-light still in the eye. Today is a new daylight, a different population at the bar.

Brief-Klassen-Sichtungen so far: one Surry-Hills-Anglo-creative-male early-thirties at the counter (Vault-coded), one Anglo-Australian-coastal-female late-twenties at the window-bar with a heavy-paperback (Bondi-pendler-line). Both tracked, neither approached. The afternoon-route will tell.

Onibus Yagumo opens 07:00. The morning queue holds three.

Heim-Anker first day. Walk-corridor along the Meguro-Gawa is six minutes from the atelier door. Cherry corridor is full green now, late-May warmth.

The bench-side seat by the side-window had a Naka-Meguro stand-stand: thirties, architect-coded, a soft-charcoal cardigan, an open Aldo Rossi monograph at the right thumb. He ordered a single-origin Brazilian and stayed forty minutes.

Behind him, a quieter cluster: a woman in a Margiela-Tabi-loafer and a pair of Mikimoto pearl studs, reading what looked like a Kawakami Mieko paperback. She stayed twenty.

Outside the window the Aobadai-Print shutter was rolled up halfway. Tomo on the workbench, white T, ink-trace at the cuff. A walk-by nod. We exchanged five seconds.

Kobayashi at ShugoArts. Curatorial pulse stayed quiet — Vault-Tokyo editor on the back-wall corner, Brutus print-design pair at the entrance. The Korean-Tokyo cross-curatorial crowd held the Whitestone-Choi room for forty minutes longer. Two seniors I recognised from Frieze Seoul 2024, plus one new face I had not seen before.
