Story

The sketching-discipline was better.

I asked permission to sit at the other side of the table. They said yes. We talked for thirty-five minutes. They are six weeks into a Tokyo residency at REBEL CHILDREN BERLIN-TOKYO, a small queer-fashion zine that runs Berlin-Tokyo crossover features twice a year. They have lookbook-work for Per Götesson (primary, two seasons) plus Kiko Kostadinov secondary (one season). London-based, currently subletting a Koenji-six-week-share from a fellow zine-contributor.

Biografie

Born 1999 London, Hackney. Mother Sayaka Saeki, Hokkaido-Sapporo-born, software-engineer at a Hackney-Wick start-up plus part-time Japanese-language tutor. Father David Hayward, Devon-Exeter-born, freelance documentary-photographer (commissions for Granta, Sunday Times Magazine, BBC long-form). Parents met at a 1996 Tokyo Sapporo Beer Foundation residency (mother was Sapporo-side host, father was visiting British-photographer). One younger sister Hana Hayward-Saeki, 22, currently second-year Goldsmiths Fine Art.

UK education: Hackney comprehensive, Central Saint Martins BA Fashion Communication 2020-2023 (graduated with first-class). MA Royal College of Art Critical Practice 2024-2025 (completed last summer).

Came out as non-binary at twenty (2019, during CSM second-year), uses they/them pronouns in English. In Japanese, uses context-appropriate first-person register (僕 boku in casual, わたし watashi in formal) without forcing a non-canonical pronoun-slot — the linguistic accommodation reads as careful not performative.
