Catalog Brief
Catalog reader, found her at the Shimokitazawa weekend flea this morning, second vintage stall on the Comme/Issey rail. Twenty-seven Japanese from Osaka-Kobe (Kansai inflection in the sales-talk to the stallholder), 1.74 m, short dark crop just above the ears, single silver hoop left ear, very light eyeliner on the lash-line only and no other make-up. Slim-strong square-shouldered build, androgynous-leaning geometry. Touched the seam-finish of a 1990s Comme tailored coat before reading the inside-tape — knows the year before the price. Unsigned-discovery, freelance-direct, Sangenjaya vintage-store side-job and Osaka graphic-design background. Brief-Match primary: editorial-new-face plus character-cast for the SS27 androgynous-precision register. Approached on second sweep 14:10, agreed to a Hobonichi note and a setcard.
Story
Eleven twenty-two at the Shimokitazawa flea. Vinyl-and-cafe corner, the weekend market was already loud and the second stall had the COMME DES GARÇONS / ISSEY MIYAKE sign in marker over the rail. I noted her the first time at eleven twenty-five — she touched the seam-finish of a 1990s tailored coat before checking the label. The hand-position was the reading-position, not the trying-on-position. She read the inside-tape first, then the outside-shape.
I came back at fourteen-ten for the second sweep, pack-down was an hour out. She was at the same rail with a different coat in her hand. I introduced myself, she gave me a small one-line smile and her name. Asuka Tagami. Kansai vowels — Osaka born, Kobe raised, Tokyo since the second year of graphic-design school in 2024. Side-job at a Sangenjaya vintage store, that explains the seam-reading.
I told her honestly — never been approached for modeling, never thought about it. I told her I am not asking her to think about it as modeling. I am asking her to consider working a SS27 lookbook for a brief that wants androgynous-precision plus subculture-anchored geometry, and her face plus her stance answer that brief without performing it. She heard it. She did not say yes, she did not say no, she said she would think about it and gave me her number for the studio.
Card exchanged. Sunday lunch tentative for a longer talk before the JW Anderson submission window closes Tuesday. Note: she did not ask about money, she asked what the brief was about. That is a tell.
Biografie
Born 1998 Osaka-Suminoe, raised Kobe-Higashinada from age six (father transferred to Kobe-port operations, mother continued her dental-practice in Higashinada). Younger sister 24, lives in Osaka, no industry connection. Mother still in Kobe, father retired and back in Osaka.
Bunka Gakuen graphic-design BA Tokyo 2024 (third try at the entrance exam, started two years later than her cohort). Lives in a shared apartment in Sangenjaya, Setagaya west, fifteen minutes from Shimokitazawa by Inokashira-line. Side-job at a Sangenjaya vintage store called HOUNDSTOOTH four shifts a week, archive-pieces specialist, walked into the store off the street and was hired on the spot when the owner saw her handle a 1991 Comme runway-piece without consultation.
Languages: Japanese native (Kansai inflection still strong despite Tokyo years), English conversational (self-study, Bunka curriculum-touch), no other.
No agency-status, no prior castings, no editorial appearances. Has been photographed twice by a friend (a Bunka second-year fashion-photography major) for portfolio-work, both informally, never published. No Instagram-followers-count above three-digits.
Tagebuch-fact: she said the vintage-store side-job is funding a small graphic-design risograph zine she self-publishes (printed at a Sangenjaya risograph studio, 100 copies per issue, two issues out, third in production). She brought the second issue out of her tote and showed me a spread without performance. The risograph work is good — design-school technical with a quirky-personal layout sensibility.
Brief-Match Justification
Three substrates align.
Geometry/Look: Androgynous-precision is the SS27 register the Tokyo lookbook briefs are increasingly asking for (Sacai pre-cast hybrid-silhouette, Acne resort Asia-region domestic readability, JW Anderson Tokyo capsule genderless-precision). Asuka's geometry — square-shouldered slim-strong build, short crop just above the ears, monolid-leaning eyes with calm low-line of mouth — sits in this register without performing it. Importantly: she does not perform androgyny as a styling-choice. She is structurally androgynous and dresses around it. That is the difference the brief is reading for.
Industry pipeline: Unsigned-discovery is the right tier for an SS27 lookbook deeply-domestic-reading slot. Signed-Tokyo talents at this register are mostly already booked through the September TFW schedule. Asuka's no-prior-castings status is an advantage — she does not have agency-coded silhouette adjustments, she does not have the look-over-shoulder-for-cameras tell. She reads a brief, not a casting director.
Brief-Match logic: The standard agency pick for SS27 androgynous-precision is signed-Tokyo IMG or Bravo Models. The non-standard pick — and the one the catalog is reading for — is a subculture-anchored character-cast subject with a tactile reading-discipline (the seam-finish-first habit is industry-rare). Asuka offers both. Risograph zine plus vintage-store archive-knowledge plus Kansai inflection make her a domestic-deeply-readable subject without being domestic-canonical.
Brand-Route
- Primary: Tokyo Fashion Week September SS27 androgynous-precision lookbook track — Beautiful People, Kidill, Sulvam, Kishida-tetsuya YOKE. Plus Acne resort Asia-region domestic-readability secondary cast.
- Secondary: JW Anderson Tokyo capsule genderless-precision (if the submission-window closing Tuesday accepts an unsigned-discovery candidate — risk because no agency board, but Hana Park is already in primary slot, Asuka could go secondary). Sacai pre-cast pre-show open-call September.
- Editorial fit: Self Service, Eyescream, Popeye-women, Acne Paper. Smaller indie zines (Vetements-adjacent Tokyo plus the Berlin-Tokyo crossover register).
- Show fit: Beautiful People, Kidill, Sulvam, Kishida-tetsuya YOKE, possibly Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme women-line. Not Sacai-main-line yet, the polish-gap is real.
Suggested Next Step
- Sunday lunch 13:00 at a Sangenjaya cafe (her choice, near her shift), longer brief-conversation, no shoot pressure. Test whether she wants to engage editorially or whether the zine-work is her primary track.
- If she agrees: Monday afternoon STUDIO test-sheet — Naka-Meguro atelier, two looks (vintage Comme androgynous register plus a clean Acne-resort-leaning second look), Mamiya RZ67, ambient light only.
- Pop-up potential: Beautiful People SS27 open-call September, walk-in not booking.
- Phase 2 if consent: deeper story-bilder including risograph-zine-context plus Sangenjaya-vintage-store-context for editorial fit lock.

Hochkant portrait, head-shoulders tight crop, direct gaze into camera. A 27-year-old Japanese woman from Osaka (Kobe-raised), face structurally even-symmetric with a quirky-personal lean, monolid-leaning eyes calm direct gaze, fine straight nose, calm low-line mouth without expression, very light eyeliner on the lash-line only no other make-up, single small silver hoop in the left ear no other jewelry, short dark crop hair just above the ears clean cut. Slim-strong build visible at the shoulders, square shoulders. She wears an oversized 1990s tailored black wool coat over a plain white cotton tank, the coat-lapel visible at the lower edge of the crop. Background: soft daylight grey paper-roll seamless studio backdrop, neutral. Sharp focus on the eyes, documentary editorial register, natural skin texture, slight cool colour grade, 3:4 vertical aspect, casting-polaroid style but slightly higher production.
Bild 2 — context-shimokitazawa-flea.jpg (model: gemini-3-pro-image-preview / nano-banana-pro 2K, aspect 4:3, reference: closeup-face.jpg)
Documentary three-quarter body photograph in a Shimokitazawa weekend flea market vintage stall, Saturday late-morning soft overcast daylight. Subject: same 27-year-old Japanese woman from the reference image (face geometry exactly as the reference, no drift) — short dark crop hair just above the ears, monolid-leaning eyes, single silver hoop left ear, very light eyeliner only, slim-strong build. She stands at a hanging rail of 1990s tailored coats and 1990s archive Comme des Garcons pieces, hand reaching out to touch the seam-finish of a black tailored coat (palm angled to read the inside-seam tape), head tilted slightly down to look at her own fingers. She wears an oversized 1990s black tailored wool coat over a white cotton tank, wide-leg pleated cotton work-pants in dark navy, chunky black work-boots laced halfway. Small canvas tote slung on her left shoulder. Background visible: a portion of the vintage stall white tarp shelter, hanging coats, a handwritten Japanese signboard reading sale prices, blurred passers-by in the depth of field. Three-quarter framing from waist-up, 4:3 horizontal aspect, observational street-documentary register, natural colour grade slightly muted.
